History of Santa Claus, Indiana

According to oral tradition the town of Santa Claus was named one Christmas eve in 1849.  According to legend no one in town could think of a name for the new town until that evening when Santa Claus arrived to distribute presents to the kids.   Someone then suggested the name of Santa Claus, which stuck and became the official name of the new community.

The town has since grown to more than 2,164 residents (2003 Indiana Dept. of Commerce statistics) boasting the largest population in all of Spencer county.

LEGENDS OF SAINT NICOLAS
The roots of Santa Claus reach back to a monk named Saint Nicolas. Saint Nicolas was born around 279AD in the town of Patara, close to the city Myra, in Turkey.  It is reported that he gave away all of his inheritance and spent his time traveling and helping the poor and the sick.
